The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

UN's 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) were set to help build a better world for all. Taken into account by all stakeholders, they give an idea of the actions to undertake to fight against poverty, environmental degradation or injustice, or to ensure the health of populations and good conditions for workers. As this article published in Nature shows, AI can contribute to reaching these 17 objectives (e.g. it can be used to automatically identify oil leaks, contribute to the increase of productivity of an organization's employees or promote learning), but it can also hinder the pursuit of some of them (e.g. the production of algorithms is very energy intensive and AI can reinforce discrimination against women and minorities).
